Romania’s investment funds get close to half their historical highs; European shares rise
ACT Media – news agency - 14 Mai 2008
The apathy of the local investors and the low interest shown by foreign players for the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BSE) brought the shares of Romania’s investment companies (SIFs) close to half the maximum values seen last summer; European stocks advanced. Deals amounted at 33.34 million lei (9.1 million euros), up against the 30.93 million lei seen yesterday.
Abroad, Europe’s main stock exchanges witnessed losses as UK’s inflation inflated and the lower crude oil prices cheapened the shares of oil companies. The FTSE index in London lost 0.77 percent to 6,172, the DAX index in Frankfurt dipped 0.11 percent to 7,028 and the CAC 40 index in Paris lowered 0.25 percent to 4,963.In Romania, the BET index measuring the ten best companies on the BSE advanced 0.14 percent to 6,883.85 and the BET-C composite index tracking all listed shares minus investment funds lost 0.07 percent to 4,884.87.The BET-FI index of the five SIFs decreased 2.19 percent to 48,542.69. The ROTX index for trading blue-chips in Vienna gained 0.61 percent to 16,259.99.Banca Transilvania (TLV), Romania’s fifth lender by assets, was the most liquid yet the price of the shares stagnated at 0.6950 lei. The shares of BRD SocGen (BRD) upped 3.38 percent, to 21,40 lei. Erste Bank (EBS) listed on the international tier of the BSE inched 0.47 percent to 171 lei. SIF Moldova (SIF2) cheapened 2.36 percent to 2.07 lei. SIF Muntenia (SIF4) lowered 3.16 percent, to 1.53 lei. “Concerning the investment companies, no special interest was shown for the purchase of their shares, not even at the present prices, even though unfavorable news were not released,” WBS Romania broker Florin Catinas told NewsIn. SIF Banat-Crisana (SIF1) decreased 3.86 percent, to 2.24 lei. SIF Oltenia (SIF5) idled at 2.70 lei. Broker Cluj (BRK) shares recorded one of the steepest falls in the market, of 11.69 percent, to 0.68 lei. Catinas believes an external sale order may have been given today, for a large quantity of BRK shares and this caused the loss. On the energy segment, shares of the country's biggest oil company Petrom (SNP) gained 0.20 percent to 0.49 lei. Gas operator Transgaz Medias (TGN) decreased 0.65 percent, to 213.10 lei. On the derivatives sector, Petrom’s derivatives gained 4.03 percent, to 0.49 lei, as 50 contracts were closed. SIF Moldova (SIF208JUN) derivatives lost 2.22 percent, to 2.20 lei and SIF Oltenia (SIF508JUN1) derivatives dipped 1.75 percent, to 2.80 lei.
