Expansion of retail networks, facing competition laws
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 19 Mai 2008
Less tension between suppliers and the important retail chains might mark the beginning of a more mature local market, and the solutions of harmonizing the relations between suppliers and retailers should come from both sides, read the conclusions of the seminar 'Expansion of retail networks facing the competition laws' organized on Thursday by Ziarul financiar daily and Salans lawyer house at Marriott Hotel of Bucharest.
On a market where international store chains expand by the day, the company's attention focuses more on the regulations in the field: the changes in the field of trade makes them leg behind. Competition Council might come up with an answer following the opening of an investigation, this March, in the field of food trading.
Competition Council president Gheorghe Oprescu says the investigation is aimed at finding out the latest changes on the market. He mentioned the competition authorities do not defend competitors but the competition.
Retailers and producers see things from two different perspectives. Head of Auchan hypermarket network Regis Mougel says this is generated by a still immature market in Romania, adding that the country is still in a phase in which producers and the important trade networks have began to know each other.
In turn, producers blame the tensions with the big retailers on the latter's inflexibility in negotiating with the suppliers.
Mougel believes that the relations between some local producers and the big trade chains can improve in time.
