Zentiva seeks to be regional leader of generic drugs market

Zentiva will conduct in Romania this year some nine million lei (roughly 2.5 million euros) worth of investments and it plans in the period ahead to become a regional leader of the generic drugs pharmaceutical industry, the drugs producer announced.
Zentiva, after having taken over local medicine factory Sicomed, has invested about 25.6 million lei in Romania, or the equivalent of seven million euros, the company added.
'Zentiva group plans to become, in the period ahead, the leader of generic drugs pharmaceutical industry in Central and Southeastern Europe', Zentiva N.V. president and CEO Jiri Michal said.
He stressed Romania is and will be one of the most important countries in which the group develops itself, 'a market which, alongside Czechia and Turkey, represents the engine of long-term safe sustainable growth. The signals we received at the end of last year and the results in the first quarter of this year confirm that the strategy developed in Romania functions and we have all reasons to look confidently that the goals we set this year can be successfully met', the official said.
Zentiva's investments in Romania will be directed, in the upcoming period, to the production facilities and to the development of a new product portfolio.
The new products to be launched in the Romanian market will include both prescription and OTC drugs to treat heart diseases, diseases of the central nervous system as well as pain-killers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Zentiva's majority shareholders are Sanofi-Aventis Group (24.9 percent), Generali PPF Holding B.V. (19.2 percent) and Fervent Holdings Limited (7.6 percent). The company's managers and staff hold a combined 5.9 percent stake in Zentiva. Other institutional and private investors hold 42.4 percent of the company's stock.
