Eli Lilly plans to become Romanian anti-diabetic drug market leader

The local branch of US Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company plans to become of the anti-diabetic drug market leader, by launching new products and increasing investments, Business Standard reports on Monday.
'We plan to cover one third of the Romanian anti-diabetic market within five years. This type of drug currently makes up some 25 percent of turnover,' said Corporate Manager Daniel Popescu. The company will launch a program to inform diabetics about this disease. Its portfolio includes some ten anti-diabetic drugs, and three new products will be launched in 2008.
Eli Lilly will also launch one drug each for the central nervous system and the treatment of leukemia.
The Regional Manager for South East Europe, Camilla Shen, said the company will invest 15-20 percent more this year in Romania.
Popescu added that the Romanian anti-diabetic drug market is worth some RON 200 million (€54.62 mln). Eli Lilly's main competitors on the local market are Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis and Novo Nordisk.
