Romania has to focus on niche tourism in upcoming seven years, say specialists

Romania must concentrate on niche tourism in the five to seven years to come, respectively cultural tourism or the one addressed to some social categories, under conditions in which the mass tourism market is already covered by countries which invested for at least 20 years in order to have this type of tourism, as it is the case with Greece or Turkey, estimated on Monday specialists present in the Hospitality Forum, organized in Bucharest.

'Romania runs big deficits at the infrastructure and agriculture chapters. Therefore, we think we must promote niche tourism in the following years', said Sorin Ionescu, managing partner with Fivestar Hospitality Consulting. To become a mass tourist destination Romania must implement a 20-year strategy to this end, and investments should be coordinated by the state. 'Romania does not know at the moment what to do with this sector. If it wants to become a mass tourism destination, the same as Turkey, Greece or Egypt, it needs a long-term strategy, applied unitary. Nevertheless, for instance, Romania can offer tourist attractions on the Black Seaside by investing in technology or environment, to attract niche tourism', said Miroslav Dragicevic, senior partner with Horwath Consulting Zagreb. Representatives of the Romanian Ministry for SMEs, Trade, Tourism and Liberal Professions stressed that Romania is to acquire, starting with 2008, a new country brand, to be finalized and implemented up to 2011. According to the Master Plan for Romanian Tourism, Romania is to record 15.4 million foreign tourists by 2026, compared to 6.03 million in 2006. It is estimated that the money drawn from tourist packages sold to foreigners will attain 7.74 billion euros compared to 1.7 billion in 2006.
