Second nuclear plant to become operational as of 2020

Romania's second nuclear plant will become operational as of 2020, the government allocating the funds for the feasibility study, Ziarul Financiar informs.

The construction works at reactors 3 and 4 at the Cernavoda nuclear plant (southeastern Romania), where the state is major shareholder, will begin this year. Director general with Nuclearelectrica National Company Teodor Chirica said that the new plant will have two or four reactors, each of them with a 600 or 1,200 MW power. The investment for reactors 3 and 4 is put at 2.2 billion euros, private investors participating in the project besides the Romanian state: CEZ, Electrabel, Enel, ArcelorMittal, RWE Power and Iberdrola. The Government also analyses the possibility that the state, owning 90 percent of Nuclearelectrica, to have a similar statute in the new investment. The governmental decision will be submitted to approval this week. Ziarul financiar informs that the state will own 51 percent of the new plant. One of the reasons why it is seeking the majority stake in the project company is that the Romanian state is the one which manages the nuclear waste. Romania owns two nuclear reactors at Cernavoda plant, covering 18 percent of the national electricity consumption. The first reactor, with a 700 MW capacity is operational as of 1996, and the second, with a similar output, as of October 2007.
