BNR: Will banks self-regulate as regards foreign currency crediting?
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 28 Mai 2008
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) expects to see whether commercial banks will take their own measures as regards the limitation of crediting in foreign currency or an administrative measure will be required, even if is not accepted by the banks.
‘'The regulation level of the banking system will go up in Romania, but the problem is whether banks will self-regulate or the imposition of a regulation will be necessary. I am skeptical about banks' ability to self-regulate, however, we'll wait and see whether they will self-regulate as regards the crediting in foreign currency for the population,'' said on Tuesday at a conference of retail banking, chief economist of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), Valentin Lazea.
BNR's chief economist added that the commercial banks do not have to underestimate the risk of the lack of liquidity, as it happened in the United States, and take measures in order to be protected in crisis situations.
Each bank from Romania will find their own way to approach the issue of limiting the risk of crediting in foreign currency, said on Tuesday at the conference on retail banking, president of the Romanian Banking Association (ARB), Radu Gratian Ghetea.
