Non governmental credit slowed down annual growth rate in April at 64.4%

The annual growth rate for credits granted by banks to the population and companies slowed down in April to 64.4%, from 66.3% in March, on the background of maintaining the high rate of loans in lei and slowing down the increase of credits in high currency, the central bank announced on Tuesday.

The nongovernmental credit amounted to 168,734 billion lei (45.9 billion euros) at the end of April, on the rise by 2.5% compared to March. The rate slowed down compared to the interval March 2007-March 2008, when a 66.3% growth of credits granted to the population and firms was registered. Loans in lei granted to firms had the highest increase in April, 4.1% more than the previous month and 46.8% compared to April 2007, up to 39.98 billion lei (the equivalent of 10.9 billion euros). In exchange, credits to the population in the national currency advanced at a lower rate, by only 2.5% against March and by 42% against April 2007, up to 36.6 billion lei (the equivalent of 9.96 billion euros). At the end of April, 54.61% of the value of loans granted by banks to the population and firms was represented by credits in high currency (slightly dropping from 54.98% in March), the rest of 45.39% being in lei. Foreign exchange credits granted to firms amounted to 47.02 billion lei (12.8 billion euros) at the end of April, on the rise by 1% against March and 53.6% against April 2007, while foreign exchange loans granted to the population amounted to 45.13 billion lei (12.3 billion euros) at the end of April, 2.7% more than at the end of the preceding month and by 137.7% over the April 2007 level. The governmental credit (of the central and local administration, of social security administrations) dropped in April by 0.6% compared to the previous month, up to 10.07 billion lei (the equivalent of 2.74 billion euros).
