Nokia makes 1 million mobile phones at Jucu-based production facility
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 29 Mai 2008
Finnish company Nokia's facility based at Jucu, close to the Cluj-Napoca city (central-western Romania), has already produced 1 million mobile phones in three months since switching-on.
'This figure represents a great success for us and it should give reason to be proud to all those who supported us in launching our production here,' company manager John Guerry said.
The Nokia facility in the Cluj county started production on February 11, 2008. The factory has now around 700 employees. Nokia estimates the number of employees will reach 3,500 the moment the maximum production capacity is reached.
Currently, the Cluj county-based factory makes mobile devices for the European markets.
The decision to build a factory in Romania was made public in March, 2007, and was mainly due to a significant increase in volume recorded by Nokia worldwide as well as to the increased demand in mobile devices on the European, Middle East and Asian markets.
Nokia chose Cluj as the location for its new facility due to the skilled labour existing here, the good quality internal and external connections in terms of logistics, general efficiency, long industrial tradition in the area and due to the possibility to build an industrial park to host the suppliers and the partners of the company.
The construction works at the factory started in July 2007, with the first stage having been completed in a record time, in only 7 months. The second stages of the construction goes according to plan, with estimates saying it will be completed by the end of the summer.
Nokia is the largest producer of mobile terminals worldwide, with the company's portfolio including also equipment, solutions and services for the communication networks via Nokia Siemens Networks.
In 2007, Nokia recorded a net profit worth 7.205 billion euros (some 10.5 billion dollars), that is an increase by 67 percent on the figure in 2006.
The company sold 437 million mobile phones in 2007, that is an increase by 26 percent on the previous year, which is a record figure having allowed a growth in the market share of up to 40 percent, consolidating thus the position as the leader on the world telecommunications market.
Nokia estimates the mobile phones market will grow by some 10 percent on 2007 this year.
