Romania's special alloy imports at 40,000 tons a year

Romania's imports of special alloys, used for the production of components in the nuclear, aerospace and auto industry, reach some 40,000 tons annually, the equivalent of some one billion euro, say trade representatives. Of the total, some 5,000 tons are annual imports of super-alloys (highly pure alloys).

Prices for special alloys vary between 12 euro per kilo for special steel products and can go past 30 euro per kilo for certain categories. Laurentiu Tigau, president of Pro Auto Industries - the company that owns a special alloy mill in Giurgiu (that did not yet start producing) says that the highest demand for special alloys comes from companies producing for exports: machine-tools, sub-assemblies for the auto, aeronautics, aerospace, nuclear, oil and gas industry. Tigau says that a growth is noticeable in demand for sub-assemblies from companies operating in the wind energy industry, mainly from entities based in Germany and the Netherlands. Suppliers of special alloy subassemblies are exclusively from outside the country, one of the main importers being Voeller Co., controlled by Austrian concern Voestalpine. In partnership with other companies, Pro Auto Industries group intends to invest at least 100 million euro in the next three or four years in tooling and increasing the capacity of the Giurgiu steel mill to over 30,000 tons a year.
