Sintofarm forecasts 20 pc growth in 2008

Bucharest pharmaceutical producer Sintofarm estimates 20 percent growth in business in 2008, in lei, based on new products launch.
As well, the company is to concentrate on food supplements segment, as well as on the expansion of Centrofarm pharmacy chain, Mariana Georgescu Sintofarm CEO was quoted as saying by Business Standard daily.
In 2007, the company turnover rose 20 percent compared to the previous year due to four new drugs authorized on the Romanian market, as well as the restart of cardiac treatment medicine (Propanolol), following the approval given by the Ministry of Health as for a higher selling price.
Prior to 1989, Sintofarm was the largest domestic producer of raw materials for pharmaceutical industry in Romania (more than 100 products), but it gradually eliminated the chemical synthesis up to 2003. At present, the production activity covers jelly-medicines, suppositories, tablets, as well as a segment of food supplements.
Some 40 percent of turnover is represented by products sold in pharmacies without a prescription, the difference being mainly covered by medicines on prescription. Food supplements, field where the prices are not regulated, accounts for 8.3 percent of the turnover. The company also produces disinfectants, organic jellies and some products previously prepared by the chemists, as for instance oxygenated water and iodine tincture.
Sintofarm Bucharest has a share capital of 9.65 million lei, the equivalent of some 2.68 million euros. Main shareholders are Iberestate International Holding, accounting for 26.46 percent of the stock, Interfinance Capital Investments Ltd., with a stake of 26.23 percent, Generalcom Bucharest, with 13.63 percent and the Financial Investment Company (SIF4) Muntenia, with 13.0 percent.
