E & Y: Romania, Europe’s sixth country in terms of foreign investment projects in 2007

Romania tops the table for Central and Eastern Europe and is the sixth in Europe when it comes to the number of investment projects attracted last year, according to a ranking authored by Ernst & Young audit firm, Mediafax reports.

Romania also maintains its top rank in terms of foreign investors’ appeal for expanding activity, being the third in Central and Eastern Europe after Poland and Russia, with 10 per cent of the principal international companies contemplating an investment in this country. In 2007, Romania attracted 150 FDI projects that created nearly 12,500 new jobs, placing the local market to the sixth position in Europe according to those criteria. Romania is also the third market of Central and Eastern Europe when it comes to the number of new jobs created by investment. Romania attracted 7.1 per cent of the total jobs established in 20 European countries in 2007, however lee by 12 per cent compared to 2006. The smallest number of new jobs was reported in Switzerland – 2,200 and Ukraine – 2,300. Investment in the automotive, electronic and electrical sectors provided 50.2 per cent of the total number of jobs created in Central and Eastern Europe. ‘The automotive sector remains the source of most investment projects, the number of new jobs opened by automotive companies in 2007 being 28 per cent larger than in 2006, namely about 6,700. Romania, Slovenia and the Czech Republic remained the main beneficiaries of the automotive sector expansion with projects such as Ford that acquired the Daewoo plant in Craiova where it will invest EUR 675 M and create 3,100 jobs,’ reads the report. In April, Romania had the third fastest growing industrial production in the EU – 11 per cent – compared to April 2007, being outrun by Lithuania and Poland, according to European Statistical Office Eurostat.
