Banks, non-banking financial institutions lend 26 billion euros to clients in May

As many as 4 million Romanians contracted loans with the banks and with the non-banking financial institutions (the INFs) too this May, worth 94.5 billion lei (that is 26.1 billion euros), according to data released by the Credit Office.

The Credit Office was set up almost four years ago by the banks in the Romanian system to manage such information related to the retail credit market. Current data from the Office show that in late May the average loan contracted by Romanians who got financing from a bank or an IFN stood at 23,625 lei (some 6,500 euros). The Office has collected information from the partner institutions for almost three years now, both negative (regarding such delays in paying the debts by the customers or related to such untrue statements made by them) and also positive information (data related to the type of contracted loans and their value, even in the case there were no problems recorded with the repayment.) Currently, the Office collects positive data from 24 commercial banks, covering thus 92 percent of the retail market. Besides such banks, other six IFNs (leasing and consumer loans companies) bring positive information to the Credit Office. According to data collected by the institution, the total number of active accounts in the end of May stood at 6.6 million. Taking into account that there were only 4 million customers recorded with current debts, this means that two out of three Romanians who borrowed money from banks contracted more than a single loan. The information collected by the Credit Office also showed a high appetite of the customers for consumption. Out of the total loans contracted, 66 were consumer loans. Ranking second there were the credit cards, with more than 1 million such accounts being currently open. The statistics show thus a powerful development on the credit card market, while taking into account also tat the market started almost from zero four years ago. Ranking also second in terms of types of loans contracted there were the overdrafts, with a total of 700,000. The mortgage- and real estate loans total only 150,000 accounts.
