Big foreign funds start to be drawn to Romania

So far, only small and medium-sized funds have been active on the Romanian market, but the increase in the value of the transactions may draw the big players from the private equity industry (closed-end funds with risk capital), found a survey conducted by KPMG, UniCredit and Baker & McKenzie.

Romania ranks after Poland in terms of the next 12-month investment intentions of the private equity players in Central and Eastern Europe. The acquisitions will mainly target the family businesses and the medium-sized ones. According to the survey, the most important factor for the success of the deals in the area is the local expertise, followed by a good management team. The ranking of obstacles for investing in the area is topped by the global credit crunch, local regulations and legislation, matters related to management and political turmoil. Cristian Nacu, head of the Bucharest office of Enterprise Investors, one of the most active private equity firms in Romania, the most interesting sectors at present are the consumer goods, the business services, infrastructure and construction materials. 'Year 2008 and the near future will be phases of intensification of the investment presence of private-equity type in Romania. We are witnessing the interest on the part of some big players who have started scanning the local market for identifying the targets with a substantial critical mass, suitable for their appetite. We expect coagulation and restructuring actions for preparing some big acquisitions, and the financial-banking field, petrochemistry, retail, manufacturing and telecommunications will be under the spotlight,' said Daniela Nemoianu, representative of KPMG Romania.
