Moretti Polegato: Romania must invest in youth training, tourism and agro-food industry
Nine o'Clock - 3 Iulie 2008
Geox factory from Timisoara counts this year on a growth of 84 per cent of the sales on the Romanian market, to EUR 2.4 M.
The economy of Europe should rely on intellectual work, and Romania, which is an EU member country must invest in youth and innovation, declared yesterday, in a press conference, Mario Moretti Polegato, Honorary Consul of Romania for the North-East region of Italy. “Romania can definitely offer today on the market extremely well trained youth in the domain of IT, engineers, chemists, who are largely sought not only in Italy, but throughout Europe,” Mario Moretti Polegato said. On another hand, “the agro-food industry is lacking in Romania, although it could bring a special contribution in agriculture, in the past being called the “granary of Europe,” but we must deal seriously with this segment. Tourism industry is also interesting for foreigners,” the Consul added.
During the conference, Moretti Polegato, also president of the Italian footwear factory Geox, discussed about the factory that he holds in Timisoara and which counts in 2008 on a growth of 84 per cent of the sales in Romania, to EUR 2.4 M, and will invest EUR one M in the manufacturing unit. The factory from Timisoara was an investment of USD 75 M. Geox has 1,800 employees in Romania, in whose training it will steadily invest, Moretti Polegato added. Last year, the company had a business turnover of EUR 1.3 M in Romania. The factory from Timisoara produces 2.5 M pairs of shoes every year, 78,000 of them being sold in Romania. “In terms of volume, the factory from Romania covers around 10 per cent of the total production of shoes of the company, which rises to 23 M pairs per year, but in terms of sales, the activity from here has a small contribution to the global business,” Geox president added.
Geox footwear is distributed on the local market in six shops from the Otter Distribution network. “Geox has invested EUR one M for the creation, within the factory from Timisoara, of a design department equipped with modern equipment. Our partner, Otter, is that who makes the investments in the shops. Currently, we are satisfied with the collaboration, and therefore we shall not enter the market with another distributor, nor are we interested to open our own shops,” Polegato stressed. He said the strategy of the company targets the direct trading only on the markets from Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland, the US and Canada. In the remaining countries there are partnerships with the local distributors and the multibrand shops.
The Italian company reported last year, at international level, affairs of EUR 770 M, while in the first quarter of this year the total sales rose to EUR 365 M. Over 60 per cent of the sales were registered on the markets from Germany, France and Spain.
