ACT Media – news agency - 7 Iulie 2008
At the end of 2007 some 8 out of the 41 banks in Romania had a market share, in terms of assets, that exceeded 5 percent, reads the Report on 2007 of the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
Moreover, another 9 players had market shares ranging between 1 and 5 percent while the image of the domestic banking system is completed by the other 24 banks under the 1 percent threshold.
According to the BNR, the top five players continue to dominate the market, holding 56 percent of the total assets, several percents down against 60 percent in December 2006 and 59 percent in the previous years.
On the other hand, the number of banks with very small businesses (assets under 100 million euros) went up last year thanks to some green-field investment. Thus, the Portuguese with Millennium opened a local branch while Bank of Cyprus, the Spanish La Caixa and the Portuguese FiniCredito set up branches in Bucharest, based on the European financial passport.
The average value of the assets per player went up 26 percent in 2007, to 1.6 billion euros. Still, only 13 of the 41 banks in the system have assets exceeding 1.6 billion euros.
The total assets in the Romanian banking system went up 45 percent last year, to 250 billion lei (or about 70 billion euros).
