BCR, BRD and Raiffeisen, first positions in 2007
Nine o'Clock - 7 Iulie 2008
Although they were successful in preserving the positions earned in the previous year, the first three banks in the system lost from the market share in favour of small banks, according to BNR annual report.
Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR) remained, last year, on the first position within the hierarchy of Romanian banks, based on the market share in terms of assets, with 23.4 per cent, according to the annual report of National Bank of Romania (BNR), cited by HotNews. The next positions belonged, like in 2006, to BRD, with 15.5 per cent, and Raiffeisen, with 6.3 per cent. Although they were successful in preserving the positions earned in the previous year, the first three banks from the system lost from the market share in favour of the small banks, as the Report outlines.
Eight of the 41 banks in Romania had a market share larger than 5 per cent, compares to only four banks in 2006. The other banks which exceeded, in 2007, the 5 per cent market share in terms of assets, are, based on this order, Transilvania Bank (5.5 per cent), BancPost (5.3 per cent), UniCredit Tiriac (5.1 per cent), Alpha Bank (5.1 per cent) and Volksbank (5.1 per cent).
Compared to 2006, there have been changes in the classification of the first ten banks in the Romanian market. In 2006, HVB Tiriac ranked the fourth and Alpha Bank ranked the sixth. In 2007, HVB Tiriac and UniCredit, which merged in the meantime, went down to the sixth position.
ABN Amro, ranking the 12th in 2007, had the seventh position two years ago. Volksbank preserved position eight, yet CEC advanced to nine, in 2007, and ING to ten. In 2006, these positions belonged to Romanian Bank and to UniCredit.
In 2007, 17 of the 41 banks from the system succeeded to exceed 1 per cent market share. The first five banks cumulated a market share of 56 per cent and they continued to have a prevailing market position.
BCR had 23.8 per cent market share last year, down compared to 2006, when it had 26.2 per cent. Also, BRD market share decreased from 16.3 per cent to 15.5 per cent and in case of Raiffeisen, from 8 per cent to 6.3 per cent.
“The concentration degree in the banking sector was stabile, in spite of the fact that slight decreases were registered, in the last quarter of the year, in terms of market share, in favour of small and medium sized banks, most of them being more aggressive in relation to lending activities”, according to BNR Report.
The total assets in the banking system were amounting to RON 250.78 bln. (EUR 69.47 bln.) at the end of 2007, by 45 per cent more than in 2006, when they were amounting to RON 172.2 bln. (EUR 50.92 bln.).
