ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 8 Iulie 2008
Timisoreana, the most sold beer brand in terms of value, gained one year ago as many as 2.5 percent as regards the market share, reaching 11.3 percent . The rise was mainly prompted by the release of the 2l PET package in 2006, Mihai Barsan official of the company that holds this brand, Ursus Breweries , division of multinational South African Breweries (SAB) told daily Ziarul Financiar.
Timisoreana reported in the fiscal year April 2007 - March 2008 sales worth 2.2 million hectolitres, up 43 percent as against the same period one year ago. The rise was supported by the rapid development of international shop chains and the growth reported over the past two years in the beer industry. Last year , the beer sales amounted to some 1.2 billion euros.
Timisoreana plant was purchased by SAB in 2002, following a transaction worth 12-15 million euros. Some 70 percent of Timisoreana sales are going to modern retail, as the brewer pays a lot of attention to the Horeca sector.
World giants Heineken, InBev, SAB Miller and Carlsberg hold 80 percent of the local beer market, one of the few where consumption reached the European average. The best sold beer brands in Romania in 2007 were Timisoreana, Bergenbier, Burger, Golden Brau, Neumarkt, Noroc, Ursus, Bucegi, Skol and Ciucas. Except for Skol, all the other brands are local brands developed by independent players or brands purchased by multinationals during the process of consolidation on the local market. Leader in the segment is Heineken with a market share of 31 percent.
