Carturesti business is worth 20M euros

The six Carturesti book shops opened in Bucharest, Cluj (central), Timisoara (west) and Iasi (east) were designed by Nicoleta Dumitru (32) and Serban Radu (36) as a ‘village of the books' (the name suggests the name of a place), as a community for those working according to different rules, but also as a business started in the year 2000, which totaled 20 million euros in a book market where competition is very tough.

The moment the bookshop had opened, the key idea was to create a public space under communication rules and values different from those existing in Bucharest, an alternative to the materialism of the Romanian society late in the 90ies, when it was shameful sometimes to be seen holding a book in your hand, while walking in the street, Serban Radu told Target magazine. If things have changed ever since this is also thanks to Carturesti bookshops. Both designers have new ideas for the next 20 years. New bookshops are to be opened in Bucharest, Sibiu (central) and Suceava (east), with the expansion being a requirement claimed not only by demand, but also by competition. Numbering 120 employees, Carturesti awaits the profit to grow and consolidate its 3rd place in the market. The start investment was worth about 15,000 dollars, the first bookshop was opened in June, 2000, in the University area in Edgar Quinet, but it became not large enough after two years. The owners found a larger space in a building dating back from the 19th century, in the Arthur Verona Street. Several investors showed interest in the business. 'Some of them even showed interest in buying the whole business, but we were more interested in growth, without harming the brand's value, the two partners told the same magazine. Carturesti expects sales worth 5 million euros in 2008, compared with 3.7 million euros last year, with a three percent profit margin (150,000 euros), and the Group's total value grossing more than 20 million euros in case it is sold.
