Value of mobile phone-based transactions rises by 35% year on year

In Romania, the monthly value of micro-payments - transactions of up to 10 euro (20 euro at Vodafone) - based on the mobile phone - is estimated by specialists at 200,000 euro, with an annual growth pace of 25 - 35%.

Tudor Ciobanu, manager of Rentabiliweb, an important player in this sector, quoted by Capital magazine, estimated the market would stand this year at 3.5 - 5 million euro. He says there are three fields that top the ranking of micro-payments: classified ads, online games and press subscriptions. The local market is restrictive versus the other European markets. Very popular applications, such as the payment for car parking through text message, are not implemented in Romania, being considered to small to he introduced in the micro-payment category. The fact that only 20% of population is connected to high-speed Internet versus 95% in Eastern Europe is a handicap. However, the experts consider the country has a huge potential, as the penetration rate of the cards that enable online payments is by far lower than the mobile phone penetration rate.
