SIFs fall almost 60% since start-2008

The Financial Investment Companies (SIFs), the most traded companies on BVB, is going through the most difficult period in the past 8 years, because since the start of the year, the SIFs have lost more than half of their value, Ziarul financiar daily writes on Tuesday.

Since the start of July, the SIFs' index, BET-FI has lost some 25%, whereas the general index of the market, BET-C, has declined some 7%. In the same period, BET, the index of the 10 most important companies on BVB, fell 10%.

Moreover, the SIFs posted in H1 declines bigger than those recorded by the market, with the BET-FI index having lost 41% versus a 34% decline posted by the BET index and below 30% by the BET-C index.

'The SIFs are declining the most because they are the most liquid shares. In a context in which the liquidity of the most shares on BVB is increasingly lower, the investors are selling what is easier to liquidate,' says Florin Ilie, head of the capital markets department of ING Bank.

The brokers say the negative trend of the SIFs has been caused also by the lack of confidence on the market and lack of money.

'It is possible for someone who has no confidence or has no longer resources to sell at present to cover their losses somewhere else,' says Adrian Manaila, head of brokerage house Eldainvest Galati (east).

The daily writes it is not clear who is selling. Some brokers say it is about local investors, who have lost their patience. Other brokers say it is about foreign investment funds, which are selling now for fear that the liquidity will decrease so much as they will no longer be able to sell. However, the source writes that many brokers voice optimism regarding the future trends of the SIFs.

The representative of Eldainvest says there is the risk for the shares of the SIFs to reach new lows but when they become attractive in terms of dividends, the investors will resume their purchase.
