Ursus Breweries, 22 pc sales growth above average on this market, in Q1

The local beer producer Ursus Breweries posted 22 percent annual growth in sales volume in the first quarter of the fiscal year concluded in June 2008, reported to the same period of the previous year, due to higher production capacities.

'We managed to continue growth on a market with a slower growth rate, of 5 percent, and in spite of changing weather conditions. We will keep investing in brands, in production capacities and marketing and we believe we will keep performing above the market's growth', Ursus Breweries President and CEO, Stephan Maria Weber, told Business Standard daily.

According to company representatives, in order to meet higher demand on the market, Ursus Breweries is expanding its production capacities, to hit the target of seven million hectoliters, up to the fiscal year-end, to be concluded on March 31, 2009.

The newspaper reports that Timisoreana brand consolidated its market leader position on the mainstream segment, with 28 percent increase in sales volume, Ursus Premium strengthened its leadership on the premium segment, while Ciucas sales increased 26 percent, ranking second on the economic segment.

By the end of May 2008, Ursus Breweries accounted for a 29 percent market share, say Ursus Breweries representatives.

Ursus Breweries has its headquarters in Bucharest and owns four breweries in Cluj-Napoca (center-west), Timisoara (west), Buzau (east) and Brasov (center) and has in excess of 1,500 employees.

The domestic beer market recorded in H1 of this year a volume of 9.9 million hectoliters, according to data of the Brewers Association in Romania, 7.9 million hectoliters being the contribution of multinational producers present locally. Beer consumption per capita in Romania stood last year at 89 liters and, this year, an average level of 95 liters per capita is expected.

In value terms, in 2007, the beer domestic market exceeded the level of one billion euros.
