Bega Group could be first Romanian wind turbine maker
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 12 August 2008
Bega Group numbering 29 private trade companies could become the first Romanian turbine maker, within two years at the longest, the Business Standard daily informs.
The Group expects a turnover worth 240 million euros, this year, by 20 percent higher than in 2007.
'We haven't decided yet whether we take a license from a foreign manufacturer or we are to assembly wind turbines for a big company,' Group's President Marius Cristescu told the daily. It is worth saying that Bega Group also owns the Faur industrial park, the largest in Bucharest.
Bega officials are currently holding talks with two companies, namely the German Nordex and the Russian Marshall Group to which Faur already supplies sub-assemblies for wind turbines, Cristescu added. If an accord is reached, the Group can start making wind turbines on the Faur platform in less than two years. At present, Bega makes bodies and legs for the wind turbines it exports.
Although, Cristescu admits that the wind power market represents an opportunity in Romania, he says he is not interested in becoming a wind power but only a wind turbine supplier. 'It is a fantastic market that it pays off to invest in. Given that about three-four thousand wind turbines are expected to be set on the local market, it deals with a market having a potential of 3-4 billion euros. Moreover, there are not many on the Romanian market, which can think of such a business, because they don't have the required infrastructure. One needs huge halls and big machines like that Faur owns,' Cristescu told the newspaper.
Over 5,000 MW wind turbine projects have been listed and investments of at least 6.5 billion euros have been expected on the Romanian market so far. The biggest companies that listed projects are Iberdrola Renovables, Spain, the biggest world wind power maker that bought projects worth 1,600 MW in Romania, the Czech Group CEZ that took over the most advanced project started by Continental Wind Partners, an investment fund in renewable energy operating in Central and Eastern Europe and the Italian ENEL Group.
