CSA: H1 2008 gross premiums underwritten reach RON 4.422 billion

H1 2008 gross premiums underwritten reached RON 4.422 billion, according to provisional data released on Monday by the Insurance Supervision Commission (CSA).

Compared with the similar period of 2007, the indicator was up 22.32 percent in H1 2008.Stated in euro, for an average exchange rate of RON 3.6709 to the euro computed as an arithmetic mean of daily series released by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) in the first six months of 2008, the H1 2008 gross premiums underwritten were some 1.204 billion euros, up 11.01 percent from H1 2007.

At the end of the first half 2008, 8,767,595 non-specific insurance agreements and 7,871,022 life assurance agreements were in force.

The volume of non-specific insurance policies underwritten in H1 2008 was RON 3.572 billion, up 21.72 percent from H1 2007 in nominal terms, making up 80.8 percent of the total underwriting.

A breakdown by classes indicates that motor insurance policies continued to make up the largest share, of 75.2 percent of the total gross premiums underwritten in the total of general insurance. Class III insurance policies concerning means of land transportation (optional CASCO insurance) advanced 39.75 percent in H 1, 2008 year on year, while premiums related to Class X insurance - civil liability motor insurance policies (RCA plus CMR) went up 17 percent over the same time horizon. Given the developments, Class II policies advanced 6 percentage points, to 46.6 percent, while the weight of Class X policies declined one percentage point, to 28.6 percent.

Life assurance policies generated gross premiums underwritten worth RON 849.92 million, meaning 19.2 percent of the total underwriting recorded in the first six months of 2008 by the insurance companies authorised by the CSA to do business.

It can be noticed that in the stated interval, the growth of life assurance gross premiums underwritten outpaced the growth of general insurance gross premiums underwritten, 24.93 percent to 21.72 percent.
