Local telecom market to rise to 4 bln euros this year

Telecommunications market in Romania is to surge this year 10.6 percent, from 14 billion lei (some 4.21 billion euros) to 15.5 billion lei (some 4.41 billion euros).

The estimated progress for this year will be somewhat lower compared to 14 percent, in 2007, on the background of a drop in tariffs practiced by the operators, following the intensification of the competition, maintain analysts of Polish PMR firm.They point out that this is the lowest level, following 2000, when a hike of 101.7 percent was obtained by a sector which recorded at that moment business of some three billion lei (approximately 150 million euros).Despite all these, the local telecommunications market will also remain this year one of the most dynamic in Europe, with a strong growth exceeding the evolutions in some other states of the region, Ziarul financiar daily reports.

According to the mentioned study, the most rapid advance was achieved on the segment of Internet and data services, where the number of users rose from 499,000 in 2003, to 3.3 million in 2006, numbering 5.79 million persons last year.

In 2007, the Internet and data market jumped, in value terms, by some 23 percent, to 1.53 billion lei (some 460 million euros), accounting for some 11 percent of the overall IT&C market, a rise by one percentage point.

The growth is mainly due to the favorable macro-economic situation, population's higher revenues and a drop in telecommunication services' tariffs. According to PMR estimations, the number of users of Internet and data services advanced annually by approximately 90 percent in the past five years.

This year, the Internet and data market is to jump by some 20 percent in value, followed by a two-digit annual growth by 2012.

At this year-end, according to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Karoly Borbely, the weight of It&C sector will account for 10 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to 7 percent at the level of 2007.

As well, the Minister of Communications estimated that the value of local IT&C market will exceed seven billion euros this year as against 5.2 billion euros in 2007, the growth being generated by the diversification of services and the introduction of some new user technologies, such as WiMAX.
