CEZ to invest EUR 1.1 bln in wind power projects, largest in Europe
Nine o'Clock - 28 August 2008
The company is set to develop two wind power projects in Dobrogea, totaling 600 MW.
CEZ has taken over from Continental Wind Partners two wind power projects located to the north of Constanta, projects totaling 600 MW, with the investment totaling EUR 1.1 bln, Mediafax informs. The company will develop the largest land based wind farm in Europe, having a capacity approximately twice larger than the largest wind farm project in existence and almost thrice larger than the largest wind farm that currently operates on the continent. Continental Wind Partners (CWP) will manage the construction of the wind farm and the tools needed for the first stage of construction have already been bought. The construction works on the projects situated in Fantanele and Cogealac localities will start in September and will consist of several stages that will run until the end of 2010. The completion of the first stage is scheduled to occur at the end of 2009, when the wind power plants will have an installed capacity of 347.5 MW and 139 wind power turbines supplied by General Electric Group. ‘Investing in renewable resources is one of the strategic measures that we take as an answer to the European Union's climate-energy policy. In this view we also focus on expanding our production portfolio by including gas-burning power plants and nuclear power plants, thus using a different method of attaining our goals to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions,' Martin Roman, the President of the Administration Board and general director of CEZ, has stated.
CEZ is present in Romania since 2005 back when it took over Electrica Oltenia, an energy distribution and supply branch. The Czech group is involved in building reactors number 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, alongside Electrabel (Belgium), ArceloMittal Romania, RWE (Germany), Enel (Italy), Iberdrola (Spain) and Nuclearelectrica. At the same time, the company competes against Gaz de France in view of taking part in the construction of a thermal power plant in Galati, alongside Termoelectrica, Electrabel and E.ON (Germany), and in view of taking part in a similar project in Borzesti.
SEN unable to absorb wind farms' high production level
Transelectrica, the company that manages the national energy grid, has received connection requests from wind farms with a total capacity of 12,000 MW. The two operational reactors of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, totaling an installed power of 1,400 MW, produce 17-18 per cent of Romania's energy needs.
Transelectrica has announced last week that the National Energy System (SEN) will not be able to absorb the wind farms' high production level for which the company received connection requests from investors. According to the state company, SEN can currently absorb only 3,000 to 4,000 MW from wind farms. Moreover, Dan Preotescu, Transelectrica's planning director, has estimated last week that 75 per cent of the projects that demand connection to the grid would never be completed. The most advanced wind farm construction project in Romania, with a total installed power of 600 MW, is located in Tariverde locality, between Tulcea and Constanta, the investment being estimated at approximately EUR 600 M.
