Romanian investors do not expand regionally but prefer to sell their business

Romanian entrepreneurs do not want to expand abroad, but to set up businesses in the local market to sell it to foreign investors and then live on the money, BNR spokesman Mugur Stet said, explaining the low volume of local investments in other countries.

"We do not have businessmen who would invest abroad. Some businesses are created to be sold to foreign investors. The role of investing abroad belongs to the private world and is not the role of the Romanian state to stimulate Romanian investments abroad," Stet said at the conference presenting the 2008 World Investment Report made by UNCTAD.According to the report, last year, investments of Romanian companies abroad registered a negative value of - 62 million dollars, while in 2006 the Romanian capital flow in other states was 423 million dollars, and in 2005 it was -30 million dollars."Negative values of capital investments indicate the fact that at least one of the components of direct foreign investments - the flow of capital, reinvested profits or loans between company subsidiaries is negative" the report shows.Romania ranks last in EU, companies from Poland making investments abroad of 3.3 billion dollars last year, while Hungarian firms invested 4.1 billion dollars in other markets.According to the performance index of Romanian investments abroad, calculated for 141 states, Romania dropped 14 positions last year to 91 after advancing from 95 to 77 in 2007.This criteria places Romania after Kenya, Algeria, Moldova, Albania, Zimbabwe.
