Alstom to build factory in Bucharest

The French industrial group Alstom intends to build close to Bucharest, until H1 2010, a factory of equipment for the local energy producers.

'As of 2010, the local energy producers will have access to the latest technology in Europe. It will be produced in a factory near Bucharest that has H1 2010 as finalization deadline. The total investment exceeds 150 million euro and is implemented by Alstom Power Romania', said the representatives of the local subsidiary of the French group, without giving additional details about the type of the equipment that will be made in the new factory or the concrete location of the unit.

The Alstom investment, the first of this size made by a relevant company on the local market, was announced in a moment when, projects of billions of euros were announced locally for the building of thousands of MW in the sector of electricity generation, Ziarul financiar writes.

According to the data with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Alstom Power Romania recorded, in the fiscal year 2007, a turnover of 34.42 million euro and a net loss of 0.76 million euro, Business Standard writes.

According to Business Standard, Alstom took the market by surprise with the announcement of this decision, in the context in which one of its main competitors - The US conglomerate General Electric - communicated publicly at end-2007 it was considering a similar possibility.

The officials of the US giant said then the local market might be a destination for the new unit that will produce energy equipment, Romania being among the candidates.

Alstom Power Romania works in upgrade and maintenance of the electricity-generating capacities.

In Romania, Alstom group holds several companies, with the most important of them being Alstom Power Romania, Alstom General Turbo and Alstom Transport, and also a centre for coordinating the environment projects in the area.

Locally, the cumulated turnovers of the group stood at 78 million euro, if Alstom General Turbo and Alstom Transport are taken into account.
