Capital: 300 Romanians have together 39 billion euro and Gigi Becali is the wealthiest Romanian

The fortune of the wealthiest 300 Romanian businessmen reached 39 billion euro from 24 billion euro in 2007 and George Becali is the wealthiest Romanian, according to the classification of the 300 wealthiest Romanians made by Capital weekly.

The fortunes of the 300 businessmen cover 32.5 percent of the Gross domestic Product (GDP) of Romania against 27 percent in 2007, with them holding shares in 3,500 companies.

George Becali comes first with a fortune estimated at 2.5 billion euro, followed by Ion Tiriac with 2.2-2.4 billion euro and Dinu Patriciu with 2-2.1 billion euro.

'Though the fortune of the wealthiest Romanians went up, in 2008 we might have poorer millionaires, because most of them invested in the real estate field, a market affected by the world financial crisis. That is why few of them still have a comfortable cash-flow,' said Raluca Barbuneanu, coordinator of the project with Capital weekly.

According to the classification's coordinators, if the real estate assets were deducted, the fortune of the wealthiest Romanians would be only 20 billion euro. A good thing is the big number of young millionaires that have entered the classification.

As regards the activity fields the Romanian millionaires are involved in, the real estate field comes first, followed by constructions, construction materials, energy industry, retail, services and capital market.

The criteria for the classification started from the calculation of the companies' market value, the value of the real estate investment, financial investments in banks and capital markets.

Though in other similar classifications the criterion of the stock exchange capitalization is defining, there is a small number of listed companies in Romania, the classification's coordinators say.
