Nabucco is a project aiming at transporting gas from the Caspian Sea are to Europe via Turkey, Romania, Hungary and Austria. The pipeline is to measure 3,300 kilometres in length and is to transport some 31 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually. The gas pipeline might become operational in 2012. The final decision on the building of the Nabucco pipeline should be taken this year. If this happens, the construction works might begin in 2008/2009, with the first transport to be carried out in 2012.
The Nabucco project was initiated by five companies in the field: OMV (Austria), MOL (Hungary), Botas (Turkey), Bulgargaz (Bulgaria), Transgaz (Romania). Recently, the Nabucco consortium became the 6th partner in the project by the inclusion of the RWE company (Germany).
Conceived as an alternative to the natural gas supplied by Russia, Nabucco is to offer the European Union an alternative source of supply with gas from Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.
