Steven van Groningen: Romanian banks are not directly exposed to international financial crisis
ACT Media - News Agency - 17 Octombrie 2008
The president of Raiffeisen Bank, Steven van Groningen declared that Romanian banks are sheltered from the storm of the international banking system.
"First of all our clients should not worry. We have a central bank which knows the system very well. I am confident when BNR says there are no problems. We have in Romania several additional things compared to other markets. The National Bank has encouraged us to prudence and even imposed it to some extent, we have compulsory minimum reserves that are higher than in other countries and no Romanian bank is directly exposed to the international financial crisis," Steven van Groningen said. Assurances of bank representatives were strengthened by BNR governor Mugur Isarescu. He said Romania was not directly affected by the global financial crisis but was not fully protected either."No foreign bank with problems at home can withdraw its capital. Romanian banks are very well capitalized. We have capitalizations of over 13% and there are banks with a solvency degree of 14-15%, so they are very solid," Mugur Isarescu said.
