Criminal sanctions planned for slandering banks

The Romanian Banks Association (ARB) intends to introduce a provision in the Criminal Code holding the slanderers of the banking system accountable; the method to implement this initiative will be decided upon next week.

'The ARB initiative is aimed at settling the issue of bank slandering that causes prejudice to the system. The National Bank of Romania (BNR) said such an approach is necessary. Together with Minister of Justice Catalin Predoiu we will find a way to introduce a provision in the Criminal Code allowing charges to be pressed against those who tarnish a credit institution,' ARB president Radu Gratian Ghetea said on Thursday.

Ghetea added that Prosecutor-general Codruta Kovesi had the same favorable stance on the issue.

'We will all meet next week to decide how to implement this idea,' said Ghetea.
