Ford highway to cost EUR 1.1 bln
Nine o'Clock - 20 Octombrie 2008
The express road Craiova-Pitesti will cost EUR 1.1 bln, without VAT, and the total length of 121.85 km are scheduled to complete between 2009 and 2010, based on the information provided by National Company for Highways and National Roads, cited by Romania Libera.
The construction of the express road includes land expropriation, for which it is not clear whether funds have been allotted. As it seems, the authorities cannot use the EU funds.
The heavy traffic will pose problems in terms of driving between Craiova and Pitesti. In fact, Ford representatives left the impression that they were concerned in relation to the ability of the Romanian administration to develop the infrastructure at the pace the Americans invest in Craiova.
On the other side, Romania will have to invest annual amounts of EUR 4-5 bln over the next 10-15 years for the construction of around 3,000 km of highways and for maintaining the network of 16,000 km of national roads. This statement has been made for Agerpres, by Michael Stanciu, main shareholder in Search Corporation, the largest players in the Romanian infrastructure consulting market. He said that Romania would have to use the public-private partnership in this respect since the state budget is not sufficient.
