BritCham chairman Davies: Crisis will drive Romanian workforce back home
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 24 Octombrie 2008
The major effect of the international crisis on Romania will be the return home of workforce who left for jobs abroad, said Brian Davies, chairman of the British Romanian Chamber of Commerce (BRCC), cited by Bucharest daily Business Standard.
'We do not know what the impact of the lending crisis will be. But we expect skilled workforce to return to Romania; wages increased and this will be similar experience to that of the Poles in Great Britain, many of whom returned home. If this happens, this can only be beneficial because these people are a key element for Romanian economy,' said Davies.
Referring to the country's strive for foreign investments, Davies said that infrastructure is one of Romania's weak points. 'Moving around in this country is very difficult. From my 12-year experience in Romania, I can say that things have grown worse, with the ever rising number of cars and ever worse roads causing traffic bottlenecks. For a producer who needs to haul his merchandise, infrastructure is a crucial aspect,' underscored Davies.
In his opinion, the sectors of Romanian economy that are attractive to British investors are machine building, IT, services, real estate and farming.
'I believe that the redirecting of large automotive producers to Romania is good news for this industry and the suppliers [...] Take the example of Slovakia or Czechia, where the arrival of large auto producers prompted the development of centers of excellence. Universities have also developed such centers. At the same time, the related industry has prospered too. I expect investments in this area and even if demand for automobiles will temper or even see a decline in the coming years, people will keep on buying cars,' said the BRCC chairman.
Davies also remarked that 'Bucharest's IT and media business are booming,' and rural areas have a 'very high potential for agribusiness.'
'Romania has vast resources that are evidently used below possibilities,' said Davies.
In the end, Brian Davies said that overall the 'business environment is friendly' but speaking as a producer himself, he noted that government support for this category of business owners is nil.
