Ford: Romanian automotive market to grow by 15 pc per year in next five years
Nine o'Clock - 29 Octombrie 2008
The sales of new cars in Romania could drop by 30 per cent next year if the pollution tax is not modified, ACAROM President Constantin Stroe warns.
Ford estimates that the Romanian auto market will grow ‘slowly but stably' by about 50,000 units per year or 15 per cent in the next five years, Vladimir Vosicky, Ford Romania's development director, stated yesterday during a conference on the auto industry. He pointed out that the C market segment (compact class), the commercial vehicles' segment, the SUV segment and the upper average class segment (C/D) will be the market segments that will grow the most.
According to Vosicky, the Romanian auto market will register the sale of 2.3 million new vehicles in the next 5 to 7 years, and the number of vehicles will reach 300 per 1,000 people, compared to today's 210.
On the other hand, Francois Fourmont, the general director of Dacia Company, has pointed out that the sales of new vehicles on the Romanian market in 2009 will register a level close to the one registered in 2006 and will not surpass 300,000 units, given the global economic crisis context and the market conditions in Romania.
‘The year 2008 will mark the consolidation of the auto market following the very high growth registered in previous years. I believe that the number of vehicles delivered in 2009 will stand close to 300,000 units, as it did in 2006,' Fourmont said. Constantin Stroe, the president of the Romanian Car Manufacturers' Association (ACAROM), points out: ‘The auto market could drop by 30 per cent in 2009 if the pollution tax is not modified,' HotNews informs. ‘The sales of new cars in Romania could drop by a severe 30 per cent next year if the pollution tax that stimulates the import of old vehicles will not be modified by January 1, 2009,' Constantin Stroe said. ‘If this tax stays in place in 2009 then it would be an achievement for the market to surpass 200,000 units sold per year' Stroe said. The car sales surpassed 300,000 units last year and that level is expected to drop slightly this year. The statistics show that the sales of new vehicles have dropped slightly in the first nine months of the year. Nevertheless, the sales of second hand vehicles have doubled and the tendency is expected to continue up to the end of the year. The Romanian automotive industry's total turnover (including the car parts segment) will surpass EUR 11.5 bln in 2008 and will represent 9.5 per cent of GDP, Brent Valmar, the Vice President of the Association of Car Manufacturers and Importers (APIA), stated during the same conference on the automotive industry, Agerpres informs. The automotive industry's contribution to the state budget stood at EUR 2.14 bln derived from VAT and EUR 147 M derived from the profit tax, while the exports surpass EUR 3 bln, of which EUR 1.75 bln from the car parts segment.
Tariceanu: EC, unnatural tackling of Ford contract issue
The European Commission exhibited an ‘unnatural' approach in the case of Ford's contract on privatizing the Automobile Craiova Company, PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated yesterday during the same conference, Agerpres informs. ‘When we started the talks with Ford we convened from the start with out partners that we want to do an industrial project. When the dossier reached the European Commission we were surprised to be told that through the way in which we set up the tender book we established terms that distort the market too, maybe because we could have obtained a better price by selling the Craiova plant without inserting terms referring to the maintenance of its manufacturing profile or of its number of employees' the Head of Government said.
Dacia could further adopt production breaks
Automobile Dacia Company could resort to further production breaks if the auto markets it is present on will continue their decline, Francois Fourmont stated yesterday, Agerpres informs. Fourmont pointed out that the production will be stopped in order to lower the car stocks but the company did not give up on its plans regarding new employments nor will it postpone the launching of new car models. ‘The decline of the auto markets affects us less compared to other brands, but it seems to me more prudent to lower the stocks' the Dacia official stated. He opined that Dacia would not attain the production goal that it announced at the start of the year (300,000 cars) after it produced almost 200,000 cars in the first nine months of the year.
