Triple play services hit 200 pct annual growth

With new services in their portfolio, many of the neighborhood internet networks have become triple play services operators in 2008, offering simultaneously Internet, telephony and cable television services.
Thus, the diversification of services was one of the main changes in the neighborhood Internet networks this year, followed by a cut operated in the price of the subscriptions by approx. 30 percent, down to an average price of some 8 euros per subscription. Moreover, with regards to the Internet, the access speed increased by some 6-10 Mbps, from 1-3 Mbps last year, according to representatives of the Neighborhood Networks Association (Interlan).
This is a very dynamic market, with the year 2007 to bring an overall growth by approx. 200 percent, reads Business Standard daily.
In 2006, the largest neighbourhood networks saw a growth in value by some 400 percent compared with the previous year.
The largest neighbourhood networks in Bucharest are now the Mit Net, Gemenii Network, DCN Telecom, Synco and Madnet, according to the Interlan representatives.
Airbites, Cobalt IT, RCS&RDS and NewCom Telecommunications concluded one of the most important acquisitions this year.
According to the source, NewCom showed a very aggressive expansion strategy; with the company having taken over 50 neighbourhood networks, since the setting up back in 2006. Moreover, Cobalt IT became, as following several acquisitions of neighborhood players, the 3rd player on the Internet services market in Romania, with 60,000 direct subscribers and 170,000 indirect subscribers.
The fix telephony operator Romtelecom has also shown interest in the Internet market, having launched three fix telephony subscriptions, including a charge free connection to the internet for one year and free of charge laptops.
The number of Internet users reach 12 million in late March in Romania, representing a penetration rate of 53.9 percent, with the local market having climbed thus up to the 8th position in the European Union, according to a study of InternetWorldStats.
Compared with the end of November 2007, the total number of Internet users increased by approx. 5 million persons, up to 12 million users, representing 53.9 percent of the total population of the country.
According to data released by research company Internet World Stats, the Internet usage rate in Romania went up in late March to 22.5 percent as against November 2007.
In 2007, the domestic Internet and data market went up in value terms by approximately 23 percent, up to 423.9 million euros, representing some 11 percent of the total information technology market.
According to estimates of the Polish consultancy company PMR, the total number of users of Internet and data services advances by approx. 90 percent annually in the latest five years.
In 2008, the Internet and data market is expected to grow by approx. 20 percent in value, with the number of broadband services users to double in the next five years, according to estimates of the same companies.
