"The Economist" corrects information suggesting assumed Romania-IMF negotiations
Nine o'Clock - 11 Noiembrie 2008
‘The Economist' has corrected an October article, deleting Romania, Bulgaria and Latvia from the list of states engaged to negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to obtain loans, all of these countries having denied any such talks, according to Mediafax.
‘We published in an article on October 23 a list of countries we claimed to be negotiating with the IMF. Latvia has shown it was in no talks with the institution. Romania and Bulgaria have denied all intention of borrowing from the IMF. We apologise for that. The article has been amended in the on-line version,' read the announcement posted by ‘The Economist' website on October 30 ‘We regret those errors, which were corrected on October 24, 2008,' is the note following the corrected article.
In a communiqué released on October 28, the IMF denied the information published by ‘The Economist,' stating that it had held no talks with the Romanian authorities on offering financial support, although it was in close dialogue on economic policies with the Bucharest officials.
The representatives of the Ministry of Finance and those of the Central Bank (BNR) have also denied negotiations with the IMF, indicating that Romania needed no loan from the international institution because it was experiencing no financing issues.
