Year of big profits in constructions, auto, retail, telecom and IT
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 13 Noiembrie 2008
Sectors which made the engines of economy roar last year - constructions, auto, retail, telecommunications and IT - have brought profits to be envied both to large companies and to small players, reads weekly Capital.
Petrom was last year the most profitable corporation, with a reported gross profit of 2.15 billion RON (some 644 million euros). At a difference of half a billion RON, Orange Romania ranks second (some 440 million euros), whereas its direct competitor, Vodafone Romania, ranks third (some 315.5 million euros).
Not only large companies posted high profits, but also the companies with a small number of employees. For instance, Pantechniki, a small-size enterprise registered in Bucharest, having as main activity field construction of motorway, roads, airports and sport arenas, reported last year a gross profit of 13.3 million RON (some 4 million euros), at a number of just four employees.
Amid small companies, Pom Service in Brasov (center) was the most profitable, with a gross profit of 47.7 million RON (some 14.3 million euros), very close to the 51.8 million RON (some 15.5 million euros) reported by the most profitable medium-sized enterprise Sodexho Pass.
'One frequently tends to forget the percentage SMEs contribute to the Gross Domestic Product - more than 50 percent - and to the national budget - more than 70 percent', underlined Ovidiu Nicolescu, National Council of Small and Medium Sized Private Enterprises in Romania (CNIPMMR) President.
'Of the more than 600,000 companies in Romania, just 1,900 are large ones', he continued, underlining at the same time that the business environment is not friendly to small entrepreneurs.
At last year-end, a number of 617,000 companies were registered in Romania, 9.4 percent higher than the previous year. Of the 45,000 newly set up companies the highest gross profit was reported by Goldbeck: 41.6 million RON (some 12.5 million euros). Set up in Bucharest, in August, with a single employee and constructions as activity object, Goldbeck is the German company branch selected by Nokia to raise its plant in Jucu, Cluj County (center-west). Enel Energie comes second, with a gross profit of 40.1 million RON.
'Year 2007, the same as 2008, did not offer the best context for the development of private companies in Romania. A CNIPMMR poll reveals that just 51 percent of the entrepreneurs see Romania's business environment as friendly to their trade', said Nicolescu.
But he says that, in the context of the international financial crisis, already felt on the domestic market, as well, the percentage is satisfactory. 'Investments already slowed down and there are problems at many levels, including the staff one. We are especially worried that banks doubled interest rates without justification because as BNR Governor used to say the Romanian banking system is solid', underlined CNIPMMR President.
