An increasing number of Romanian companies affected by the global economical crisis

Dacia partially interrupted the production for two days.
Several Romanian companies announced the intention the temporarily stop production, due to the increasing international economical crisis that has immediate effects upon the national economy, Agerpres informs. The company Automobile Dacia partially interrupted production yesterday, for a period of two days, according to the activity reduction plan announced at the end of October. Yet the activity will continue these days at the parts and accessories manufacturing division, at the CKD Exports Expedition Centre and at the vehicle expeditions and finishing departments. Moreover, the manufacturing of transmissions, as well as other activities of the mechanic steel works will continue normally, the representatives of the company from Mioveni announced.
Other companies, such as the Arpechim Refinery, also announced the intention to temporarily stop production yesterday, at the synthesis department, according to the decision reached by the leading shareholder - the company Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea - to reduce its activity with 40 per cent. Oltchim had announced the decision to temporarily reduce the amount of ethylene and propylene purchased from the Arpechim Refinery, which is part of the Petrom Refinery Department, due to the decrease of over 50 per cent in the demand of petrochemical products.
The management of the company Alro has announced no final decision on the future evolution of the company business and the measures and activities of the aluminum works in Slatina are still being analyzed and depend on the future evolution of the market according to a press release sent to the Bucharest Stock Exchange, Agerpres informs. "The evaluation of such measures is part of the normal activity and part of the operational responsibility of the management, with the purpose to assure the ability of the company to compete on the global market, which is in a massive decline," the press release mentioned .
Another effect of the economical crisis is the decision of the company Kraft Foods to close the chocolate factory of Brasov until the end of the year 2009, dismissing all the 440 employees of the company.
Over 400 inhabitants of Vrancea County will lose their jobs in December, after the company owners were forced to reduce their activity because of the economical crisis. Therefore, in the previous month, there were six employers in the county, working in domains such as constructions, wood processing and services announced the County Agency for Labour Force Occupation (AJOFM) Vrancea that they intend to dismiss 416 employees in November.
Production halved
Prosperous industrial regions are now confronted with the threat of unemployment. Of the units in Cluj, several thousand employees risk losing their jobs, according to the daily paper "Adevarul." At the Mechel works of Campia Turzii, 200 employees are discharged, although the company has prognosticated a net profit of EUR 30 million for the year to come. 500 persons will be discharged by Somesul Dej, 160 by Cesarom Turda, 200 by Hidroconstructia and 105 by Tescano. The country's greatest glass factory, Sticla Turda, has no orders to continue its activity and the 450 employees were announced that they will be dismissed starting in January.
Default risk for Ford
Ford, the controlling stakeholder at Automobile Craiova, might be at risk of default soon, according to Realitatea TV, reproducing international press. And that, since Euler Hermes, one of the world's largest commercial credit insurer, withdrew its support for the automaker. However, Ford executives in Romania said that in the short term, the Romanian investment is not affected. They nonetheless specified they don't know what long-term effects Ford's problems would have in Romania. Ford called on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to temporary scrap taxes charged on electric cars and is negotiating aid with the European Union. Ford posted a USD 3-plus billion July-September decline in sales. The company announced salary cuts of 10 per cent in the US and 3,000 layoffs.
