President Basescu: Sidex is a problem, shipyard is a hope
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 20 Noiembrie 2008
There is a problem with Sidex steel mill based in Galati (eastern Romania) and we should prevent the depreciation of the situation of the orders for the plant, but the shipyard based in this city is a hope, President Traian Basescu said at the end of the visits paid to the ArcelorMittal Steel Plant and Damen Shipyard based in this Danube River port city.
Basescu said that the representatives of ArcelorMittal leadership and trade unions told him the level of the orders from the Romanian economy for the steel mill's production has diminished, while the plant delivered some 30 percent of its output to the Romanian market.
'Certainly, the orders placed by the Romanian economy have dwindled from four or five months ago, due to the slowed down development of infrastructure, construction, auto industry, electrical appliances. We should know what areas of the Romanian economy should be boosted so that the Galati steel mill may return to the previous level of the orders', he said.
The president stressed that at the talks with the management and trade unions it had been decided that in this time of crisis there is need for a partnership, because the measures of the Romanian government will not be taken to limit the losses sustained by employers or to increase the employers' profit, but they will be meant to maintain the Sidex production so as to keep the jobs.
He reiterated that the Sidex employers' policy is not to make people redundant, 'for the moment at least'.
After visiting Damen Shipyard, the Romanian president said he was leaving with peace of mind because the shipyard has orders, but he added the only problems are related to the labour skills and the clarification of certain issues related to legislation.
'I'm leaving the Galati shipyard with peace of mind. It is a shipyard that continues to have orders. One of the big problems here is related to the labour training and skills and here we have the support given by the European Union worth 2.5 billion euros to train the Romania labour /.../ There are also legislation-related problems. At a time when there are two people working on a tugboat, we have regulations for 10 or 12 persons, which often makes our rules inoperable in front of the reality', Basescu said.
He concluded after the two visits in Galati: 'There is a problem with Sidex and we should prevent the depreciation of the situation of the orders for the plant, while the shipyard is a hope'.
