Demands for export down 10 percent
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 20 Noiembrie 2008
Export orders from foreign partners for Q4 of the year have already decreased as an outcome of the international financial crisis, by 10, up to 30 percent compared to the initial orders in all the segments, said on Tuesday Mihai Ionescu, president of the Association of Exporters and Importers of Romania (AEIR).
President of AIER called on the banks to continue to grant loans to exporting companies for the companies that have already implemented projects funded by the European Union or by the Government on the enhancement of competitiveness. Lucian Anghel, chief-economist with the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR) told daily Business Standard that though a tighter control of costs, companies may become more efficient and curb to a greater extent, inclusively the reduction of the number of orders for export.
'I believe, at present, it is important for all the companies to put more emphasis on raising efficiency, control of costs. When the management focuses on efficiency a stricter control of the costs, the slowdown of exports can be lessened. This is valid for the entire Romanian economy. We may implement a wider reorganization that will turn the activities more efficient. Besides, the degree of acceptance of reorganizations by trade unions is higher because they are facing the same situation,' said Anghel.
According to Mihai Ionescu, companies are in the situation of remaking projects because costs that the banks demand at present have increased significantly compared to the previous months.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INS), Romania's commercial deficit in the first nine months was of 16.934 billion euros, up 12.51 percent as against the same period of 2007, the dynamic of exports continuing to outstrip imports.
Exports made over January-September totaled 90.039 billion lei (25.581 billion euros) and imports were 15.46 billion lie (42.5 billion euros). Compared to the same period of the previous year, exports grew by 30.4 percent for the values expressed in lei and 18.3 percent for those in euros, whereas imports reported rises of 27.8 percent in lei and 15.9 percent in euros.
