Gold and bank deposits, profit sources in times of crisis
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 26 Noiembrie 2008
Romanians who have managed to save RON 10,000 - for 1 euro = RON 3.79 as of November 24, 2008 - and do not know how to multiply it have several options at their disposal, from the commonplace bank deposits to gold investments and even property investments. Analysts do not consider investments in the capital market, because RON 10,000 is not that large for such ends.
In the case of RON bank deposits, banks are now paying out real positive interest rates on them, which means some gain is secured, given that the interest exceeds inflation. Interest on RON-deposits has nearly doubled over the past year, from 7 percent to almost 14 percent. The savings offerings are not happenchance, and they prove the banks' need for liquidity in this time of expensive external financial resources.
A person placing RON 10,000 in a deposit paying a fixed interest rate of 12 percent per annum will stand to gain RON 1,200 in one year's time. And, what is important now, such gains will not be taxed, because the Romanian Government has taken a measure to exempt from taxation bank deposits opened by individuals. Consequently, when the deposits are closed and withdrawn, the client will have RON 11,200 in his accounts. Adjusted for the projected 4.5-percent inflation at end-2009, the amount will be worth an updated RON 10,696, which means the investment has a positive return on investment rate.
Land acquisitions could also be considered profitable investment, although barely so. 'It is very unlikely that the land prices will increase next year. Three years ago, RON 10,000 would buy a plot of land in the surrounding areas of Bucharest City, which the following year would sell for double the acquisition price,' DTZ Echinox Senior Consultant Ionut Ciocan told daily Business standard. The same amount would now buy a 200-m plot of farmland in the vicinity of the city. Analysts expect the farmland buyer not to lose and not to gain anything from his investment.
Experts are recommending gold investments in the current times of economic and financial crisis. 'This is the surest investment and at the same time the best insurance policy in troubled times, not just elsewhere in the world, but in Romania as well,' First Deputy Chairman of the Diamond Gold Federation of Precious and Half Precious Stones and Metals (FMPPS-DG) Mihail Pacioianu told the paper. Gold prices have advanced 16 percent so far this year.
Gold investments is accessible not only to large investors, who resort to the so cold financial gold, but also to medium investors. Medium investors can invest in coins with a certain gold weight of a given fineness. Available are 3-g, 6-g, 9-g and 14-g coins. The less moneyed investors can make do with second-hand jewels. 'This is the most economical option because they have a small manufacturing value. Everybody can make such an investment,' says Pacioianu.
