All along the 12 years since it was commissioned, Unit 1 of the Nuclear Power Station (CNE) at Cernavoda (south-eastern Romania) produced more than 65 million MWe, thus being one of the first CANDU-600 stations worldwide, reads a release of SN Nuclearelectrica SA.
Unit 1 of CNE in Cernavoda started working on December 2, 1996, and so far it has scored remarkable results in point of observing the requirements for nuclear safety as well as the performance in producing electric power.
At present the nuclear power station at Cernavoda works with two nuclear units. Using the two units that currently work, Nuclearelectrica is the second largest electric power producer in Romania, supplying about 18 percent of the necessary domestic electric power.
Six private investors and Nuclearelectrica on November 20 signed an agreement on setting up the project company that is to build and exploit Units 3 and 4 at Cernavoda. CEZ, GDF Suez, ENEL and RWE Power will own 9.15 percent each and Arcelor Mittal and Iberdrola, 6.2 percent each of the shares.
The two new units to be built at Cernavoda will be finished in 77 months after setting up the project company, with the necessary investment amounting to about 4 billion euros, said Minister of Economy and Finance Varujan Vosganian, who was present when the above-mentioned agreement was signed. The Romanian State will own 51 precent of the project company.
