BNR: The Romanian banking system is a reliable one
Nine o'Clock - 8 Decembrie 2008
The director of financial stability in National Bank of Romania (BNR), Ion Dragulin, says that the commercial banks in Romania are sound and there is no need for restructuring, according to The Money Channel TV.
Regarding the current situation of the country, the official of the Central Bank specifies that the serious threats have an external nature, but they are complicated by internal vulnerabilities, such as the inflation still high and the current account deficit.
The official of the BNR financial stability directorate says that as a whole, the Romanian banking system is a sound one, and the financial indicators are good. In his opinion, there is no need for a restructuring of the banking system, but only a revisal of the assets and liabilities management strategies, within the context of current threats.
The change in the structure of banking resources will result in the lending methods being revised. Regarding liquidity in the banking system, Ion Dragulin specified that this was not an excessive one, but there is. In addition, should there be any shortage of resources, the National Bank will supply liquidity up to an optimal level.
"The monetary authority has the function to supply liquidity, in our case, Romania, liquidity has reduced because the capital inflows over the past years have reduced," Ion Dragulin added.
The BNR official added that a stage of rethinking in banking policies will follow.
