Romania records highest growth rate at Chivas brand worldwide

Premium scotch brand Chivas Regal registered a growth by 60 percent in Romania in July 2007 at the end of the fiscal year, as against the same interval of the previous year, representing the most significant growth pace of the brand worldwide, according to a release of Pernod Ricard, importer of Chivas Regal in Romania, Business Standard economic daily reads on Thursday.
The company didn't say the actual value of the sales. Chivas regal is the best-sold premium scotch brand in Romania, with a market share standing somewhere around 70 percent, according to statistics of Pernod Ricard.
The domestic market of import drinks, evaluated by the players at some 80 million euros, stands for a cumulated share of 4-5 percent of the total domestic market of alcoholic drinks. The main competitors on the market are Pernod Ricard, Heinrig, Cristalex, Sollers and BDG. Among the import drinks, the best sold was the whisky, according to data on the market. Sales of whisky in Romania exceeded the most optimistic expectations of the importers in the latest years. Researchers consider the sales of this drink can be regarded as a barometer of the economic development.
The consumer of whisky in Romania lives in the urban area and is aged between 24 and 35. He s/he belongs to the middle class; the consumer of whisky is an educated person, usually a man, according to data provided by Pernod Ricard Romania.
Pernod Ricard Romania hit 20 million euros in turnover last year, with estimates for 2009 pointing to a growth by 35 percent.
