MEP Plumb: Renewable energy directive creates major economic opportunities
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 18 Decembrie 2008
Romanian member of European Parliament Rovana Plumb (the Social Democrat Party) filed on Wednesday a written statement related to the Turmes report on 'the use of energy from renewable sources' saying that in order to attain the national target in this respect Romania needs to stimulate the investment in the improvement of energy efficiency, promote the use of liquid biofuels, of biogas and geo-thermal energy as well as support the research and development, a release of the Romanian Delegation at the Socialist Group in European Parliament said.
'The adoption of this Directive will result in an enhanced confidence of the investors and a stable regulatory framework, which is essential to planning the future investment with a view to reaching the ambitious targets by 2020. The Directive on the renewable source energy creates economic opportunities for the development of new industrial branches as well as nearly two million jobs by 2020. This thing is very important amid the current economic and financial crisis', Plumb's declaration says.
The Romanian MEP stresses that 'The draft Directive sets judicially compulsory goals related to the general share of renewable energy for each member state. According to the document, Romania should increase the share of renewable energy in the total end energy consumption from 17.8 percent in 2005 to 24 percent in 2020. As much as 11 percent of the gross domestic energy consumption will be provided by renewable sources in 2010'.
'The national target set with respect to the use of renewable energy in the electricity production will be attained in the period ahead only if measures are taken to boost the investment in the improvement of energy efficiency in the entire chain - resources, production, transport, distribution and consumption; to promote the use of liquid biofuels, biogas and geo-thermal energy; to support the research and development and disseminate the results of applicable research', Plumb said.
