Romanian tourist market seen expanding 5 pct in 2009
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 19 Decembrie 2008
The Romanian tourist market might expand only 5 percent in 2009 amid the global financial crisis being also felt in Romania in this sector; this compares to forecast rises this year of 15-20 percent on the outgoing segment and 10 percent on domestic tourism, officials of the Romanian National Association of Tourist Agencies (ANAT) said.
ANAT head Dragos Atanasiu told the Business Standard daily that such 5 percent growth in Romania would be very good, when compared to other countries 'that anyway had rises of just 1 or 2 percent and now forecast a recession in tourism'.
He argued the crisis might offer a chance to the development of Romanian tourism, with the relevant authorities hoping to bring a higher number of foreign tourists here and to attract the Romanians to local tourism.
'Amid the crisis, tourists will choose destinations closer to their country and cheaper, therefore Romania might be a destination for them. However, we must extend the season and offer competitive prices if want to attract tourists', he added.
The ANAT officials proposed a range of measures meant to combat the crisis, such as approving a law on holiday vouchers to be offered by the firms to their employees, better promotion of Romania and an early booking programme that should offer discounts up to 20-30 percent to those who purchase a travel well in advance.
The tourism officials would also want the new Romanian government to adopt a law on tourism, to forge a public-private partnership to promote tourism, and they stress the local tourist industry should be depoliticised.
