Romanian leu hits five-year low against euro

Romania's national currency (leu) reached a record low against the euro, while the National Bank of Romania (BNR) Thursday announced an exchange rate of 4.1385 lei to the euro, up 6.65 bani (1.63 percent) against Wednesday (Jan 7) when the euro traded at 4.0720 lei.
Such low indicative was computed by the Central Bank on January 6, 2004, when the euro traded at 4.1438 lei.
As compared to January 2008, the leu depreciated by 15.2 percent against the euro, with an exchange rate of 3.5925 lei to the euro on January 8th, 2008.
The US dollar went up 5.71 bani (1.90 percent) while the Central Bank computed an indicative of 3.0468 lei to the dollar, as compared to 2.9897 lei in the previous session.
The gram of gold has been set at 82.6448 lei, by 59.99 bani (0.72 percent) less than Wednesday.
