Romania's leu continues fall to new record low of 4.2684 versus the euro

Romania's national currency, the leu, hit a new historic minimum against the single European currency at the central lender's (BNR) reference exchange rate after it depreciated 1.3 percent to 4.2684 units per euro, on a high market demand for foreign currency and in line with a regional trend.
BNR posted another record low at its reference exchange rate of 4.2127 against the euro on January 9.
The market is calm and the depreciation was a steady one, following orders to buy foreign currency, a market dealer declared for NewsIn.
The leu was quoted at around 4.26 at the beginning of the day, then climbed to 4.24 against the euro but fell back to a record low of 4.2770. At 1:10 p.m., banks were buying the euro with 4.2695 lei and selling it for 4.2770 lei.
In the region, the Polish zloty depreciated from 4.0165 to 4.0660 against the euro, while the Hungarian forint lost ground from 276.87 to 280 units per euro.
The leu touches new low of 3.1842 against the U.S. dollar
The reference exchange rate posted by BNR also marked a new record low of the past four years and two months of the leu against the American dollar after the national currency fell 3.6 percent to 3.1842 lei per dollar. The central lender last posted such a high exchange rate between the two currencies on November 2 2004, when the rate stood at 31,939 lei per dollar.
On international markets, the U.S. currency initially strengthened from 1.3475 to 1.3328 against the euro, then lost ground to close to 1.34 units per euro. At 1:10 p.m. Romania's hour, the euro was traded at 1.3403 dollars.
BNR posted an average interbank bid rate (ROBID) of 12.20 percent, below that of the previous session of 12.36 percent and the interbank offer rate for overnight deposits (ROBOR) lowered to 13.11 percent from yesterday's 13.26 percent.
Interbank interests for overnight deposits remained at an annual 12 - 14 percent, exceeding the monetary policy rate of 10.25 percent and close to the rate for the lombard credit of 14.25 percent.
