New historical high: RON 4.3025/EUR
Nine o'Clock - 21 Ianuarie 2009
The National Bank of Romania reported yesterday a reference exchange rate of RON 4.3025 for EUR. The rate represents a historical high.
The national currency has depreciated by RON 0.28 against the EUR since the start of the year. The EUR has appreciated by RON 0.01 against the RON compared to the exchange rate registered on Monday when the EUR stood at RON 4.2917. The USD continued its appreciation too. The USD stood at RON 3.3182, compared to a RON 3.2336 level registered in the previous session. The last time the BNR announced a similarly high RON-USD reference exchange rate the USD stood at ROL 33, 216 (October 15, 2004). ‘The European Commission's prognoses could have played an important role in the RON depreciation. The surpassing of the 4.3 threshold is not very serious. I expect a pendulum effect that would take the RON to a value close to the one it had back when it started to depreciate or even higher than that,' financial consultant Bogdan Bagdasar stated for The Money Channel.
